AUTOMATED CALL Saturday, April 30, 2011:
Hello parents, this is Dr. V. If you are receiving this message, this means that your student is in danger of not walking in the eighth grade promotion ceremony in five weeks. Your student received a PINK promotion contract today from their eighth period teacher. Your child?s teachers have put this together as a preventative measure to help ensure your child?s success in time for promotion. Please review the document with your child and discuss what they must do so they may walk at promotion. Moodle can be used to access all homework and projects. Have your child consult their teacher if they are unsure about an item. Thank you for your support, we look forward to our students stepping up their game in the last few weeks and as we begin our CST testing. Thank you.
----------
AUTOMATED CALL Sunday, April 17, 2011: As the weather warms up I want to continue to garner your support on making sure that students are wearing appropriate clothing during the school day. Also, you may see me running after school and will be doing so until May 28, 2011. Please join me in supporting the school with participating on May 28, 2011 in the Strawberry Festival 5K Run/Walk.
----------
AUTOMATED CALL Friday, March 25, 2011: The new school immunization law (Assembly Bill No. 354) requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-12 school year in California to be immunized with a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine booster called TDAP. For the 2011-2012 school year, all students entering the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grades will need proof of a TDAP shot before starting school. Proof of receiving a Pertussis Booster on/after a student?s seventh birthday will be accepted by the school as having received vaccination.
----------

What an exciting week! Again, as you know, we began the week with the district recommending that we merge our successful magnet IB program with Mission Vista HS. The school board decided it was too fast and denied the merger for this August, however, is wanting to possibly bring it back for discussion next year. Nevertheless, we are here at Vista Magnet and will continue our successful program here. Our campus is healthy and safe. In the coming weeks, we will share with you news on a change in our drop off and pick up area to provide a safer process for all. On a personal note, I want to thank you for trusting our process and supporting our efforts.

The teachers are excited and today during lunch students were more concerned about the dress code than moving! Tonight, Monday, we will hold an English meeting at 6:00pm in our gym and a 6:30pm for Spanish speaking families. Transportation will be provided when we relocate in August.

AUTOMATED CALL (Monday, October 4, 2010):
I have two messages tonight. Grades were mailed on Friday and I want you to NOT look at the letter grade first. Please look at the WORK HABITS grade. With this being your first report of the year, it is important to establish with your child their WORK HABITS first in order to see successes in other parts of their learning. Second, please continue to be a patient driver at drop and pick off. With the wet weather we need you to continue to slow down, remain patient and remember that turning from Civic Center Drive into our parking lot near the pool is illegal. Many of you take risks. I have a meeting planned with the City Manager along with our district officials to address this concern and ask for their support with our school as a Commuter School. Remember, if you are crossing a double yellow line then you need to be aware of the risks.

----------
Are you interested in keeping up with all the campus happenings? Or simply want to catch up on our PTA sponsored events? Please see the
September 2010 newsletter.

Have you met our new Assistant Principal/IB Coordinator yet? Here is a quick introduction to the talented
Mrs. Green.

The same group asked another group of students. This student reported it to her parents and they contacted law enforcement. We have asked for additional patrols in the area. I encourage students to stay in groups.

On Monday students will have the opportunity to hear a guest presenter Ren Ebel, a Vista High graduate who will be sharing the story of Doug his friend who died from head injuries while riding his skateboard and falling without a helmet. He will be asking students to wear their helmet while riding a bike or skateboard! Simply put "Do it for Doug." On Wednesday, we will have our first Staff Development and will release students at noon. Our topic this Wednesday starting at noon will be preparing for our IBMYP visit.

----------
AUTOMATED CALL (Friday, AUGUST 27, 2010): Congratulations on making it through all of my phone calls and completing our first week of school! You are officially a VIPER. This week was filled with the Word of the Week known as WOW which was THINK, Essential Questions, Language Objectives, Content Objectives and using your composition books. Parents please review your students planners and composition books in order to support our teachers. Next week we will be sending home a form for School Site Council which is a group of various people who support our school with reviewing all categorical funds and match them with best teaching practices and programs. Get some rest and we will see you on Monday!

----------
AUTOMATED CALL (Monday, AUGUST 23, 2010): What a great first day! I am very proud of our 8th graders for being great role models for the 7th and 6th, our 6th graders for being great role models for us and the 7th graders coming in with the drive to master writing! Our lunch was fantastic with having 15 minutes to spare and everyone had a chance to enjoy their lunch. The only snag in the day was the pick up of our students after school. I would encourage you to pick up your child on a different location. Be aware of parking across the street of Civic Center Drive and in the bank and restaurant area. They will tow! Also, please remind your student to bring the signed copy of the permission slip to attend our Bullying assembly during 1st period. I think this will be a positive and uplifting event that will empower your student and kick off the year even stronger!
----------
AUTOMATED CALL (Thursday, AUGUST 26, 2010): We are on our fourth day and we have our first challenge. We have unanticipated construction on our civic center drive sidewalk that leads to our office is closed for a unspecific time. We apologize and our district officials are working with the city to get a timeline. Thank you for your continued support.
----------
AUTOMATED CALL (Wednesday, AUGUST 25, 2010): Greetings, today we had a fantastic day with our teachers receiving some formal training on the program that you and your student will have access to in the coming weeks. We have adopted Moodle which is replacing Blackboard. We are excited about the possibilities and will share more in the coming days. It was nice to see our students using their composition books in all classes and working on their writing by reflecting on the Essential Question and Language Objective. Most students wore their lanyards and followed the dress code. Thank you for your continued support!
----------
AUTOMATED CALL (Tuesday, AUGUST 24, 2010): Good evening, the most powerful moment on our second day was when during the Teen Truth Live Assembly, JC our presenter asked the students to stand up if they have been bullied in their lifetime. I was amazed that more than 90% of our students stood up. When he asked the adults in the audience, parents and teachers if they ever been bullied, ALL of them stood up! The mission this year is simply to make a difference both inside and outside of the classroom. I am sure that your student now has a clearer definition what an IB Learner looks like...I want to thank you for all of your support in shaping our future engineers, teachers, doctors, business owner student body to make a difference in ALL parts of their life. Believe me this discussion does not end today, it has just begun. Remember, tomorrow is our first early release Wednesday, we release our students at 2:00pm.

Our District facilities officials are providing further cleaning of our classrooms today beginning 4:00pm. They will begin in Room 11 and make their way to the campus with the locker rooms being the last to clean. They will clean (disinfect):

Classroom Chair (backs) Classroom Chairs Classroom Phones Classroom student desks/tables Doorknobs and door jams Light switches and cover plates Classroom keyboards/mouse Computer Lab keyboards/mouse

With having our initial cleaning take place on Monday evening and having more students returning to school from their illness, we thought we would have another round cleaning as a preventative measure.

    ----------
    Monday, October 19th

Today, an unusual amount of students called in sick and it appears that in Mr. Henderson?s 8th grade period 1 & 2 - 12 out of 15 students were absent with flu like symptoms and in his 3rd & 4th - 10 out of 12 students also confirmed fever and flu symptoms with our school and district nurse.

We have no confirmation that this is H1N1 influenza. A district cleaning crew will be here this evening cleaning ?common touch? areas. It is recommended to keep your student home if he or she is sick (and 24 hours after fever breaks naturally) and promoting the use of good hygiene and hand washing as well as covering a cough.

I wanted to share some exciting news about our API score! We earned another 17 points in our overall score moving us from 875 to 892. This is exciting and a powerful display of our efforts on our campus. Moreover, our targets were met in English and Math. This was another sign that we are moving closer to closing the achievement gap with our students.

Remember, tomorrow, Wednesday, we will release at 12:00pm and will then discuss how we reward our 7th and 8th grade students.

    Friday evening, (8/28/09)

What a week here at VMMS...we are very proud of each and everyone of our students effort this week and want to stress to you their use of their composition books.

The composition book is to be used often and as a parent please review their learning by reviewing some of their notes from the past week. We teach our students a strategy called "Cornell Note taking" in order to have them conceptualize their understanding of what they see, hear, touch and physically experience in each of their classes.

So remember, effective note taking equals more success opportunities for ALL students both in their current grade and once they enter University life!

Thanks again for trusting us with your children.

    Wednesday evening (8/26/09)

On our third day we are beginning to establish work habits for all of our students. Please help us by checking your students planner to build the habit of mind to organize, keep detail information on their homework, assignments and Word of the Week.

This week by focusing on their planning and organizing is key to for any VMMS students success while on our campus and beyond.

    Thank you for your support.

Finally, over the summer I reviewed the customer service survey results from our VMMS parents and we are making adjustments to various components of our campus but the immediate change was updating the website vistamagnet.com with these phone call messages in case you miss them. Soon we will continue our PODCASTS to engage our families further.

    Tuesday evening (8/25/09)

We started today with a false fire alarm. Our students did a great job walking quietly down the halls and to the blacktop. We found that a sensor was tripped. Our lunch time is more efficient and our parking lot concerns are less. We are excited about your support and working with us to make this a great school. Don't forget to pick up your child on Wednesday as we release our students by 2:00pm.

    Monday evening (8/24/09)

Today was a great day! We are off and running. Our lunch time went better than expected. As our students get more comfortable with the process it will be much quicker. After school drop off was great considering our 200 more students. I must encourage you to meet your student elsewhere in order to avoid the traffic. The rest of the message is for 7th grade parents:

The Language Arts teachers are requesting that your students bring to school as soon as possible the following:

    a 2 inch 3 ring binder
    lined notebook paper
    8 subject dividers

All in preparation for their Writers Workshop. This is important to prepare for our statewide exam for all 7th graders in writing come March 2010. If you have any questions feel free to contact your child's 7th grade Language Arts Teacher.

    Sunday
    evening (8/23/09)
Greetings, Parents...this is Mr. V your VMMS Principal and want to remind you of three important items.
    1. Remember that we begin school each day at 8:55am and end at 3:33pm except on Wednesday's. Each Wednesday, we end at 2:00pm. Don't forget to drop off and pick up your child on time. Our gates open at 8:00am and close at 4:00pm.
    2. Our dress code is strictly enforced please review your planner and in short students are required to wear collar shirts and by the end of the week they are to wear a lanyard with their school ID.
    3.  After school pick up will be a challenge this year. We made adjustments based on parent feedback and currently we are working with a volunteer parent group to make sure we have a safe year. For students who are in their 2nd or 3rd year, please make plans with your parents to pick you up off campus such as near the library or off of Citrus or Main street.
We are excited about our school year!
